Framing Chicago’s Gun Violence Weekend

ABC 7 ChicagoThere were at least 20 people injured and 2 people killed in shootings across Chicago over this past weekend. Similarly to past weekends, Fox Chicago, CBS Local, and the Chicago Sun-Times all published updated tallies of shootings throughout the weekend. All three news outlets defined the weekend as beginning at 5pm on Friday and ending at 5am on Monday morning. All three tallies reported the same number of people injured and killed in weekend shootings. It is important to note that the gun violence coverage by Fox Chicago continues to come from the Sun-Times media wire, and so the coverage from Fox Chicago and the Sun-Times is virtually identical.

Unlike past weekends, NBC Local and the Chicago Tribune also published articles summarizing several incidents of gun violence from the weekend. The headline of an article from the Tribune read “11-year-old boy among 9 people shot, 1 fatally, Sunday in Chicago, police say.” A similar article from NBC Local had the headline “At Least 13 Hurt in Shootings Across Chicago This Weekend.” These two articles represent more detailed reporting on local incidents and trends in gun violence from both news outlets.

The tragic incident of an 11-year-old boy being shot and wounded during a drive-by shooting in the West Pullman neighborhood on Sunday made headlines from all seven news outlets. The tragedy was specifically mentioned along with the tally of weekend shootings in headlines from Fox Chicago, the Sun-Times, and the Tribune, and all seven news outlets published an individual article focused on the shooting. This seems to indicate that shootings where the victim is particularly young get more news coverage by these seven outlets.
