Recap of Weekend Gun Violence Coverage

FGun Violenceor this past weekend, Chicago Justice Project compared the media coverage of gun violence in Chicago by the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, ABC Local, CBS Local, Fox Chicago, NBC Local, and WGN TV. The coverage from this weekend was also compared to that of past weekends to identify any differences or inconsistencies.

Similarly to last weekend, coverage by the Tribune and the Sun-Times was very different. The Sun-Times conducted a tally of shooting incidents that was updated throughout the weekend. The publication defined the weekend as beginning on Friday at 5pm and ending on Monday morning at 5am. The Tribune, however, did not publish any articles covering incidents of gun violence in Chicago over the weekend. In contrast, the Sun-Times published a total of eight articles covering weekend incidents of gun violence.

Between the five news outlets analyzed, Fox Chicago and CBS Local had the most detailed coverage of gun violence over the weekend. In the chart below titled “Total Articles Published by Media Outlets Over the Weekend,” the distribution of coverage is visually represented. Fox and CBS both published tallies of gun violence incidents and updated them throughout the weekend. Just as they did last week, Fox published articles from the Sun-Times Media Wire, so Fox’s coverage is identical to that of the Sun-Times. Just like the Sun-Times and Fox, CBS Local defines the weekend as beginning at 5pm Friday and ending at 5am on Monday morning. It should be noted that, as shown in the chart below, ABC Local published zero articles covering weekend gun violence. NBC Local published two articles and WGN TV published three.
